This project is a result of a years-long collaboration with artist Antar Dayal, who lost his home and studio in the 2008 Tea Fire.
The directive was clear: rebuild a home that can better withstand the next fire storm. When we travelled to the project neighborhood, we were speechless at the enormity of loss. Our inspiration came from a soaring hawk above the site and the silvered coal left by the disaster. The roof alludes to the hawks wing. The spanning glass implies an endless horizon. The steel panels stand in defiance of the next event. And, the exposed concrete foundation makes a statement for durability and resilience. The residence is intended to act as the artist's largest canvas.
This building is registered in the Built Green Santa Barbara voluntary environmental building program. The project is scheduled to be completed 2012.
