This family had outgrown their 1951 beach cottage. They loved the charm that had developed over the years, but the house just didn't function very well for a family of three. It was time to expand.
We conceived a plan to add a modern Kitchen, Living room and Master Suite. We then separated the Master Suite from the living spaces with a courtyard to allow natural light into the core and provide a private yard on the narrow lot. To minimize the risk of unknown costs, the addition was separated from the cottage to avoid seismic retrofits of the existing cottage.
Why were we contacted? After reaching out to several local design/build remodelers, they weren't convinced that they would be able to explore design possibilities within their budget. For the cost of the remodeler's deposit, we were able to present a series of design options. With our strategic alliances, we produced valid preliminary construction costs. This empowered our clients to approve a concept and move forward with a design-optimized solution that fits within their budget. We look forward to continuing our work and realizing this project in 2012.
